Duromax XP4000s portable generator Review

A Mid-Sized Genset for Mid-Sized Power Needs

If you’re looking for a small and affordable generator that can help you keep your lights and basic appliances on during emergencies and not much else, the DuroMax XP4000S may be the model you’re looking for. In this Duromax xp4000s portable generator review, we’ll be looking at its specs, fuel consumption who’s really and we know it packs a decent punch and can be handy to have around during power outages.

When it comes to its engine capacity, the XP4000S is no lightweight, what with 7 horsepower and 208-cc size. This engine is capable of producing a surge wattage of 4,000 watts and a running wattage of 3,300 watts.

With this kind of power, you can supply electricity to your essential appliances such as your lights, refrigerator, freezer, and maybe a box fan and battery chargers. Or you can use the XP4000S as a dedicated genset for your sump pump. This genset’s wattage may not be enough to keep your household electricals running as it would on regular situations. Still, it will allow you to stay as comfortable as possible even if your house isn’t receiving any power from the main grid.

This DuroMax model looks like the right size for its engine capacity. It stands 17 inches high, 17 inches wide, and 24 inches long. It’s a little heavy at 105 pounds, though. So it’s rather disappointing that, unlike other DuroMax portable generator models, this one doesn’t come with its own wheel and handle kit. If you want the kit, you’ll have to buy it separately.

To get this machine started, you only need to flick the start switch on its control panel. Alternatively, it has an engine crank for recoil starting. Either way, the engine fires up near-instantly.

This generator is relatively quiet at 69 decibels, only slightly louder than laughter and just as loud as a dishwasher or hair dryer. The built-in muffler keeps this genset quiet and its emissions low. The engine requires an oil change or two for breaking in, as well. DuroMax recommends that you use SAE 10W-30 engine oil. The machine shuts down automatically when the oil level is low.

Fuel consumption

The XP4000S is a gas-powered generator. Its built-in tank can carry up to almost four gallons of gasoline. With this much fuel, you can expect this machine to supply you with continuous power for around 12 hours.

All DuroMax portable generator products are EPA- and CARB-certified. But if you’re going to use this genset at areas with high altitudes, DuroMax suggests that you fit your generator with a modified carburetor. The engine tends to use up more gasoline and release more emissions when used at high altitudes. The modified carburetor will help slow down the engine’s gas consumption and minimize emissions.

Output

The control panel features three outlets, namely: two 120V 20A GFCI and one 120 30A twist lock. These outlets allow you to plug in a variety of household appliances and tools to this genset. The control panel also has a main breaker and a voltmeter for monitoring and controlling output.

Ideal usage

The DuroMax XP4000S is designed to provide basic backup for power outages and similar emergencies. As a backup genset, it can provide you with your essential power needs. This specifically applies if your essential power needs only involve keeping your lights on and preventing the contents of your refrigerator and freezer from spoiling.

As a jobsite generator, the XP4000S can supply you with adequate power if you don’t regularly use heavy-loading power tools. But if such tools are vital parts of your trade, then you may want to look for a different generator with a bigger capacity. The same goes for your RV—if your RV is a small camper or five-wheeler, this genset will do. You may want a bigger one if your RV is a full-featured, 70-foot vehicle.

The XP4000S may be just the right size for your tailgating parties. It can generate enough power for your electric grill, outdoor lights, TV set, and portable sound system. On the other hand, it may be too big for powering up a campsite at tent-camping trips.

  • What users have to say

The XP4000S is another highly rated product on the DuroMax portable generator line. Many users are pleased to have this model running without a hitch years after they first purchased it. As long as it’s stored properly and its oil levels maintained, it can start with just one pull of the crank even after months in storage. Reviewers have also noted that this genset produces a lot less noise than they have expected. It’s not all praises for the DuroMax, though. Some users reported that the engine occasionally throws a fit without apparent reason, and a few didn’t like that it doesn’t come with a wheel and handle kit out of the box.
